Himalayan Mixed Hash Run No. 121323 Mar 2002Hares: Sideways and Chip Location: East of Hattigauda |
Two great haring teams each donated a hare to get this week's job done.
Januz, of the Canuck Team was busy recovering from eye surgery, and Mary, better half of the Chip-n-Mary duo, stayed at home with daughter Grace, passing up the chance of having Grace listed as the youngest hare on record.
Two circulations of driving instructions helped the gang reach a good parking area near the site, but Sideways insisted on the proper, and definitely better, parking field. There was concern over lefts and rights, but the singing of the Father Abraham song proved that the typical harrier doesn't worry about such details.
A pack of 43 runners, two hares and the mutt, got off to a good start, running south than then down through a gully, before again climbing to check 1, conveniently in another gully. Paper headed down and east to check 2, and then went south to holding check 3. The trail then headed east again, through the village of Tusaal, and down into the next stream bed and check 4. BACK up to Tusaal, and then AGAIN down to the stream, across it, UP again, DOWN to the stream again, and finally UP to a little knoll north of Tusaal; and the pack was at holding check 5. Assorted wiser runners chose more direct routes to the holding check. As soon as the 'check-it-out' cry was given a distant on-on echoed in from the north. It was The Fox, having run through the check and hid himself behind a knoll, ready for a huge head start. We dropped off the north end of the knoll to head north and then north-west to check 6 at a temple. A bridge got the pack onto paper heading west and back to the chariots.
The Desert Fox hat correctly scored the hash at 9.85. The pack was touched by how easily people from various parts of North America could cooperate.

Sadly the Maoists have upset Nepal's peace, but at least have provided enthusiasm and running skills to the hash through American Peace Corps volunteers, sent in for safety. They swelled our ranks and provided us with several virgin runners. We welcomed ten virgins to the run: Helga and Carin, who will trek with Jurgen's company, PCV's Tarina, Steve, Renee and Doug, RPCV Barnie, Christina, Inge, and Maria. Mike, Chip, MacPole and the Fox were considered returnees, though some were still on the hash list. Crashers Steve, Doug and ____ got a little something to drown their sorrows. We still await the "Ladies' Hash" trash from Jodi, Wendy, and Courtnenay.
Despite his valiant efforts, Sideways got the Hashit over the parking lot confusion, - again, no justice.
