Above: The hash-starved GM and family look gloomy on the afternoon of 6th July. But this is moments before mum and dad started on the beer, and you all know what always happens after that . . . . Of course if anyone has shots of the acutal event in Toka, send them for publication here. |

Was it the perfect monsoon hashing weather - mix of sun, cloud, light drizzle, and little slush? Was it the coincidence between Maoist insurgency in the hills and the July 4th long weekend which brought Peace Corps volunteers together? Was it the GM's super advertisement for the run? Whatever, 31 runners and Ronnie (the mutt, not the hare) gathered to enjoy a super run. The approach from the ring road was challenging, with the chance to drive through a chain of muddy lakes, but once we climbed to the green parking area, spirits lifted. An aura of Eastern Peace, Calm and Compassion settled on the group as Martina was able to temper the other hare's usual Canadian "creativity." The run worked its way through check after check, staying on high ground along wide roads and trails, free from muck and leeches. Those who checked off the ridge soon had to work through the pack which happily scampered on, eventually reaching holding check 5 where Martina was waiting with the horrors. What a happy reunion! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Then Sideways took over. We left the main trails for paddy fields. We climbed steeply through leech-filled slippery grass slopes. We then dropped down just as steep a slope and tippy-toed along dikes. We splashed through streams and slush. We climbed up mined stone steps to Toka. Somehow we made it to the chariots. The pack rewarded the hares with the usual 9.9 Desert Fox Score, and specially thanked Martina for replacing Januz as Sideways' assistant -- bringing happiness to the pack through the first five checks. Despite the monsoon, newcomer Melissa joined us. We welcomed back the younger three members of the Chick family: James, T.M., and Thuy, as well as Heather, Courtney Mitchell, Doug, Trina and Steve. Calvin was quick to nail his fellow horrors for stuffing coke bottles with food. The evidence was produced, clearly behind glass, and the criminals dealt with. There were accusations of animal abuse. At least Ronnie was well protected, stayed on the leash, and did not eat any ducks. Hurry Krishna earned the Hashit for not bringing Mrs. Hurry Krishna to the run. He promises to do so "in future." Meanwhile we have a handy Hashit Recipient, to replace Apple who graced us with his presence now that the World Cup is over. We were MOST IMPRESSED with the Great Management on the part of the Rotter's Roost family and staff. Rotter and Durga have trained them well. The whole family, including Durga's father, came along with drinks and snacks. |
