KEELED OVER HAS LEARNED - A LITTLE! Despite the downpours of Monday and Tuesday, 27 avid runners ploughed through landslides and muck to get to the starting point at the tree nursery below Chalnakhel. Keeled Over had picked a better parking area lower down, but even he was afraid to travel father down that road. Twenty-six runners started, and Apple soon caught up, heading down the motor road to Check 1. Paper looped back left, along slippery trails next to inviting paddy fields, to Check 2 somewhere, and then down to the Bagmati bridge and holding Check 3 on the other side. We all prayed that this was a back check and our prayers were answered - sort of. Paper went left from the bridge, through the lepers' settlement, and back to the motor road. We then headed downstream with some comfortable running to Check 4. This was a reasonable place to climb the hill, but Keeled Over had other plans. He took us down to the Bagmati, across a stream, and then up into paddy fields for a while, before providing a great mudslide back to the same road and on to his favourite holding Check site, at the base of the Valley's first hydroelectric project. He sent the short cutters on a long march back up the road while the less intelligent followed his directions and started up the never ending steps. He mercifully (?) let us turn right after about three quarters of the climb, and sent us wandering through fields to Check 6. Paper continued down through fields, across the same old stream, up through villages, down through muck, through Check 7, along irrigation ditches, and again down through villages to the home arrow above the old road, several km. from the chariots. A little over two hours from the start, the last four, Fox, Karl, Juan Carlos and Apple, dragged themselves home and the circle immediately started. There were a few complaints concerning the run: Why did we not continue on the other side of the Bagmati to the next bridge downstream? Why did we not ford the Bagmati? Why did we not climb mudslides instead of just go down them? Why were there only seven checks with an average of 1.5 km. between them? Why was there a shortcut only 3 km long? Grumblewald made history by declaring the run perfect. We welcomed returnees Rani, Jodi and Caroline Bock, who ran the hash once about ten years ago. She left early having crashed into some nettles. We look forward to an immediate return. Virgins Laxmi Ghale, Bill Bhatta and Bill Brewster survived their first hash experience and we promised easier future runs. We bid farewell to Courtney, off to the American Midwest for a friend's wedding, and Bengt, off to Lahan for work. Hash crashers Courtney, Karl and Juan Carlos received the usual honours, while Tshering received the hash swimming award for breast strokes in a canal. We thanked Heather for feeding leeches and congratulated Rani, Christopher and Keeled Over for providing an "interesting" run and great cookies. It was easy to hand out the Hashit - to Keeled Over who still has a few things to learn about setting, but showed great improvement over the his last effort. The Hash thanks Bengt for two great services to the HHHH: He got Hurry Krishna and Mrs. Hurry out to dinner, and reported that Hurry has made an excellent choice. We look forward to Mrs. Hurry's first run with us. Earlier this year, Bengt's daughter noted that returns from the run in the G.M.'s chariot can be a little dangerous. The Nakhipot Duo tend to continue the on-on as they fly along the ring road. The Hash Rules say nothing about drinking while driving, or doing anything else, but holding a bottle in front of one's face while driving does not help one's view of the road. Bengt has provided a perfect solution: a mug that can rest on the car seat, and equipped with a long straw. Keeled Over more or less demonstrated that it works. One notes that Jodi seems to have had some experience drinking out of such mugs. We await further demonstrations. Again the Rotter's Roost team provided drinks and snacks. We look forward to the return of the Rotter and Towed clans. |
