Keeled finds the Hashit without his glasses - his ability to gauge the angle and distance to a beer still fully functioning |
As if to suggest that the Hash is full of s***, Hash 1311 was set in the precincts of Nepal's most polluted and most sacred river. The on-in site was located on the banks of the Bagmati, whilst the run traced a course alongside it. These days the hash seems irrevocably drawn to this foul-smelling outlet for Kathmandu’s waste. In recent weeks hashes 1303 and 1309 from Griot's, and 1306 from Towed's have all, at one stage or another, picked their way through the capital city's cast-off plastic alongside the malodorous bubbling battery-acid-like filthy liquid of this pungent watercourse. The dramatic scenery, flowering mustard fields, good company, and healthy exercise more than made up for the foul smell! A willing pack of 59 hashers were utterly confused by the hares' destructions about the separate courses for runners, joggers, and walkers. (The many latecomers were at a considerable advantage by missing the explanation!) Participants were warned that the route between checks 1 and 2 involved overcoming a steep barrier with the help of a rope, whilst it was advised that holding check 5 was potentially very hazardous. The initial track set the tone for the first half of the run by heading off up a very steep track. Check 1, in a riverbed, saw the pack searching every which way but the right one. Eventually Towed found paper leading downstream where the stream bed transformed into a steep-sided gorge. Luckily Towed managed to apply his brakes before encountering the first major obstacle as the stream, and the paper, plunged over a waterfall! Well, it wasn't exactly the Niagara Falls but most contestants were glad to have the assistance of the fixed rope provided by the hares. Everybody managed to get down in their own style. Peter just threw Michael Jackson into the pool below the waterfall, whilst Fangio arse-slid down the water shoot, with Grumble and Lost Ark delicately traversing round the edge to avoid getting their tootsies wet. The boy and the two Scandies were later rewarded with down-downs for this. From the grandstand holding check below the waterfall the pack continued downstream eventually emerging into the open by the Bagmati, with check number 3 shortly after. Paper was soon found zigzagging back up another steep path away from the Bagmati. Eventually after check 4, by a water tap, saw the first sustained running on the level as paper headed south through mustard fields and on to the spectacular holding check 5 on top of a 200 foot high sandstone cliff overlooking the Bagmati. From here the route led down to the large area of flat fields below and on to the new suspension bridge over the Bagmati. On the way down some of the front-runners were perplexed by Yogi Hare flying past them in midair in what was one of the best hash crashes seen for a long time. Was he practicing yogic flying? The pack was now well spread out as the front-runners correctly guessed that the route would be heading home over the new bridge and along the western side of the river to the old footbridge just upstream from the on-in site. Towed as acting Grandmaster ran the circle in his own inimitable style. The main thing missing was a down-down for the GM himself for bringing a notice board on the hash. The first one went to Roger who interrupted the opinion on the run by complaining about there having been no hare for the walkers. The run was awarded a well-deserved 9.9 and Keeled Over was given a further one for using artificial aids (the rope). Peter's dog Bass was given the hash name of Michael Jackson for humping [a younger dog -- Handphun's] on the hash whilst Yogi Hare, Sona and others were rewarded for their crashes. Keeled also got the Hashit and a further down-down for being short sighted. Thanks to Towed Under, Handphun and Ever Ready for providing the snacks. |
