Editorial note: Because of a shocking lack of coordination this hash has two trashes which are given below in the order I received them. KO Trash 1 by KL Connor Sorry about the delay, but thought we would get the mediocrity of Shrivelled and Toad's runs over before reporting on something really good. Easy directions took us to a large clear parking area in front of the temple and the hares gave the usual instructions about 11 checks and 2 holds. On-On up the hill track to the first check. Choices here of up-ahead or up and back with prospects of a right hand loop into the valley. The know-all FRBs took the back route up to a falsie, which, in their collective wisdom (about 10 IQ), they ignored and went higher. Saner hashers meanwhile, found paper straight on and up; whilst the walkers looked on in bemusement. The second and third checks were quickly found leading down to the road and then up the dry river bed, which also served as the village toilet. Not wanting to take any more crap than usual a few of the diplomats were seen heading up the road. (The walkers meanwhile, tiring of the hilly road and the foul language of the runners, cut left to join up with the runners trail at Check 7.) Check 4 at the track intersection with falsies left and right (surely it couldn't still go up?), duly researched by Shrivelled and Keeled, but no — still up further to the first hold on a grassy plateau with views across the valley — if you had your anti-smog glasses on. Falsies again right and up and Rotter and Night Owl decided they needed more climbing. With some encouragement from the hare paper was called down a steep track into the gully, up the other side and through the field to come out on a road, with paper tastefully skirting around the outside dunny ('toilet' to you non-Antipodeans). Up to check 6 by a water tank donated by the hare's compatriots (these Japanese get everywhere – at least this is one water scheme that works. Eat your heart out Andy). Paper quickly found and Rotter led the way down a nice grassy downhill klick - until sidetracked up a falsie, especially designed for him. Right turn back into the trees to check 7 with various options, all uphill and all taken. Brilliant! The trail eventually found and the pack, led by the usual FRBs, climbed through the undergrowth to the saddle to the second hold where they whiled away the time waiting for the back markers delicately flicking off the leeches from their ankles. A falsie to the top of the hill was duly taken by Keeled – must be those fell running shoes that keep sending him up – while the rest of the pack went down to the left, off paper, but hey, who cares if it gets us off the hill. By good luck rather than good management Towed then turned right and picked up paper again to check 9 where the pack regrouped with most finding paper straight ahead and a few taking the obvious short cut right. Around left and down to the tramway to check 10, quickly found left and a long run in along the dirt road – check 11 with the false down through the old village fooled no-one. First home in about 1.30 with the rest not far behind, the last walkers coming in with the back of the back. It would appear that every false trail was checked out – very gratifying for the hares. Trash 2 by Towed Although KL promised some words on the trail, they seem not to have materialised yet so I'll have a brief attempt, although time and alcohol have taken their toll of the recollections. We went up the hill (quite a long way), down again and just in case we thought we'd finished, up and over and then back round. Those first to find the way at various stages were Keeled Over, Rotter, Steffan, Yogi Hare, Towed, Grumblewald and probably a few others besides. The runners were delightfully Hared by Moosette, and the walkers by that idle bugger K L. Some of us seemed to get back well before the others (Grumble & Me) despite having stayed religiously on paper (more or less) having broken away after the holding check at the Banjyang. The circle, as seems to be the new fashion, dragged on and on and on with down-downs being given for everything long after the Hashit had been awarded. Hares Moosette, Yoshi and K L were probably awarded an obligatory 9.9, but in my view this was an underestimation and a well-deserved 9.9 would have been more appropriate. Virgins Gregoire, Dinesh, Jeff, (fast) Miho and (slow) Miho were welcomed. Gregoire has lived here for years and was finally dragged along by Lazy Towed, no idea why Dinesh and Jeff decided to come along and the two Mihos are here courtesy of JICA. (the reason for the fast and slow description should be apparent from the photos, if they're published.) Returnees were Adele, Dinesh and Someone Else, according to the photograph, but the records show otherwise. Perhaps a non-payer? Other and numerous down-downs for unrecorded sins were awarded as follows:
Somewhere early on in this saga, the Hashit had been awarded to Gun Runner for not bringing it back the previous week. Thanks to the Hares for a great run, to Mrs Rotter for the catering and to the Hares again for the feast of Japanese delicacies after the run. |
