Those
who had stayed overnight at the Dhulikhel Lodge trickled over to the car
park with some of the pack looking decidedly under the weather after the
previous night's moderate excesses. The luxury bus took us to the same starting
point as the previous day's run above Dadagaun village.
In an uncharacteristic attack of vagueness, hare Towed couldn't remember how many checks there were but suggested that it would be a good idea to follow the paper he had laid that morning rather than the Keeled Klassic route from the day before. The run was to be an A to B and virgin Anil was briefed on what to do. The paper led off to the east down through the pine forest and followed the track on a long downhill sweep towards the previous day's rice field valley. After a check or one the trail took us through Bahakal village and on down into the valley and along narrow muddy trails through the rice fields. Rotter avoided repeating his previous day's head long dive into the mud and the pack eventually arrived by the stream avoiding the previous day's trail by a matter of only about 20 metres. The paper now followed a beautiful soft and level trail by the nameless khola in the opposite direction to the previous day's run. Keeled and Margaret went the wrong way at one point. Soon the inevitable happened amidst this steep landscape and the trail led upwards with Pakesey (amazing! - GM) setting the pace at one point. The 'run' was turning into an exhausted plod now as the pace, the terrain, and the hot weather began to tell. On and up and finally on to tarmac and the first holding check on the Japanese road near Kabhre Banjhang where an elderly local quizzed us as to what the hell we were doing. Everybody stood around looking puzzled. Towed cried "check it out" and Grumble and Keeled soon found the paper and led the way up the slope to the east. Keeled has now got wise to Towed's twisted logic that you should never set a false trail from a holding check as there is no point in spreading the pack out as they are already together. But surely it's good to leave the FRBs behind even from a holding check. A steady climb up through a few rustic houses and the pine forests brought
us to a heavily guarded temple and beyond to the second holding check
with fantastic views out east over a typical midhills landscape. The sun
was really beating down now and so the happy hashers welcomed the hare's
mismanagement at getting his vehicle, with water, to meet us there. Rotter
took a few photos of some of the crew cavorting on the pagan stones. The circle happened back at Dhulikhel Lodge and was rather subdued as everybody was knackered. Keeled and Grumble got some abuse for showering before the circle and hovered around nervously in the background during the circle for fear of getting their clean clothes soaked in beer. The GM had mercy on them however. Pretty much everyone got a down-down for something or other and eventually the hashit was awarded to mein hoste Prem for 'false advertising'. All of his hotel's brochures show amazing panoramic views of the Himalayas but all we saw was a great bank of clouds to the north. We all thanked Prem and his staff for his hospitality and Towed Under and Towed for organising yet another successful hash weekend. On-on! |
